SELCO Project

E-mail Print PDF

SELCO is a social enterprise in India which primarily works to provide solar power to people without electricity and won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2005. They have recently started to look into ways of delivering other beneficial technologies to people living in poverty.

SELCO do not currently have any full-time mechanical staff to support this venture, and so this group was set up in February 2011 to provide the necessary design and development work. The group is currently working on an automatic fire feeder and a hand powered 'paddy transplanter' in collaboration with the SELCO Incubation Laboratory. The money raised will fund the materials and manufacture of prototypes.

During the summer of 2010, Cambridge student Sam Cocks spent three months in Ujire working at SELCO as part of an EWB-UK placement. You can read more about his experiences on his blog: http://sam-in-india.blogspot.com/
